Yamaha XS motorcycles have been popular in Salem, Connecticut since the late 1970s. These bikes were first released as the XS650 and later as the XS850. The XS650 was the first in-line four-cylinder motorcycle produced by Yamaha. The combination of power and affordability made it an immediate hit with riders in the area. The XS850 followed and shared many of the same features as the XS650, but with more power and a larger engine.

The XS motorcycles featured a reliable and powerful engine, slender frame, low seat height, and a unique style. All XS models featured chrome-plated plastics and a classic café-racer style. The XS650 was also popular for its options of a more aggressive, hot rod look. Other popular features included a five-speed transmission and dual disc brakes.
